Explaining Bargaining Impasse: The Role of Self-Serving Biases

نویسنده

  • Linda Babcock
چکیده

We review studies conducted by ourselves and coauthors that document a "self-serving" bias in judgments of fairness and demonstrate that the bias is an important cause of impasse in negotiations. We discuss experimental evidence showing that (a) the bias causes impasse; (b) it is possible to reduce impasses by debiasing bargainers; and (c) the bias results from selective evaluation of information. We also review results from a field study of negotiations between teachers' unions and school boards in Pennsylvania that both documents the fairness bias in a naturalistic setting and demonstrates its impact on strikes.

Illustrated examples of the effects of risk preferences and expectations on bargaining outcomes

The author highlights bargaining examples that use expected utility theory. Bargainer payoffs in the event of a dispute are represented by a simple lottery. Expectations are assumed to affect a bargainer's subjective probabilities over lottery outcomes, and risk preferences affect the expected utility of a given lottery. Risk preferences and/or expectations are predicted to influence both negot...

Choosing the Wrong Pond: Social Comparisons in Negotiations That Reflect a Self-serving Bias*

We explore the role that choice of comparison groups plays in explaining impasse in teacher contract negotiations. We hypothesize that the negotiators select "comparable" districts in a biased fashion such that teachers' salaries in districts that unions view as comparable are higher than teachers' salaries in districts that school boards view as comparable. We also predict that strike activity...

Asymmetric De-biasing in Negotiation

Egocentric notions of fairness lead to conflict escalation, impasse, and efficiency losses. While communication may attenuate this self-serving bias, the authors find that more powerful parties are relatively less inclined to adjust their fairness views following communication in a negotiation. A more even reduction of egocentrism is achieved when parties are exhorted to communicate under delib...
